Home Mountain Accord Is There Anyone Still Opposing the Mountain Accord?

I received an email this week from a Friend of the Park Rag. He forwarded news that Wasatch Backcountry Alliance was now supporting the Mountain Accord. I guess the old motto of “If you can’t beat ’em, join ’em” still holds true.

A couple of thoughts come to mind:

  1. I wonder if anyone is still out there opposing the Accord?
  2. This has been a good education on how things work… If you can just get something passed, even outspoken critics will join you. Why? Because it will seem they have no choice.

That’s not entirely fair. Sometimes, by staying part of the process, you can still elicit the change you want. That said, by staying part of the process you are also putting your name behind the endeavor.

Here is the group’s reasoning (which I must say is well thought out, as usual).

Your implication is that “supporting” the MA means not opposing various elements of it? WBA clearly is participating in the MA process because of huge potential benefits, but they also are adamantly opposed to some of the major components of it. Same with Save Our Canyons, the Outdoor Industry, Friends of Alta, The Sierra Club, and others. The idea that it is a done deal is not the reality. The real work is ahead, there are major key parts of the MA that are far from being reality, and there could be outcomes many do not want – outside of Ski Utah, UTA and the transit consultants/contractors. It’s a big, complex puzzle to put together, and eternal vigilance coupled with active involvement is the key to successful outcomes for WBA and their allies.
