{"id":7165,"date":"2017-05-11T22:40:08","date_gmt":"2017-05-12T04:40:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.parkrag.com\/?p=7165"},"modified":"2017-05-11T22:40:08","modified_gmt":"2017-05-12T04:40:08","slug":"kudos-to-the-park-city-school-district","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/v2.parkrag.com\/index.php\/2017\/05\/11\/kudos-to-the-park-city-school-district\/","title":{"rendered":"Kudos to the Park City School District"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;We\u2019re back baby!&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Or so you could imagine the elation from Park City School District Administrators on Park City\u2019s recent ranking in US News\u2019 top High Schools. No longer relegated to unranked status, Park City High School is now ranked 2nd in Utah and 418th nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this year we had written <a href=\"http:\/\/www.parkrag.com\/care-dont-care-park-city-school-rankings\/\">Why we care and don\u2019t care about Park City School Rankings<\/a>. We said we don\u2019t care\u00a0&#8220;because we have a district that seems to educate children well. We have good teachers.\u00a0We have small class sizes (our student to teacher ratio is 19:1 while Skyline\u2019s is 25:1 for instance). Whether we are ranked or not, it doesn\u2019t change that.\u201d We said we do care because the rankings factor in whether we educate ALL children \u2014 especially English Language Learners and disadvantaged students.<\/p>\n<p>What these ranking tell us is that in 2014 and 2015 the school district did pretty well, because that\u2019s where this year\u2019s ranking come from. Even more, it tells you that starting in the 2011-2012 school year things were getting better. (Wow, that\u2019s a long time ago).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Because US News doesn\u2019t publish detailed data, it\u2019s hard to get into details. However, we would be remiss if we didn\u2019t point out the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pcschools.us\/woad-local\/media\/assessment\/sage\/2015\/pcsd_sage_test_results_report_2015.pdf\">SAGE results<\/a> during this same \u00a0time period (2014-2015):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>24% of English Language Learners (ELL) were proficient in Language Arts in Grade 3 (that\u2019s one of the better ones)<\/li>\n<li>23% of economically disadvantaged kids were proficient in science in \u00a05th grade<\/li>\n<li>4% of ELLs were proficient in language in 7th grade<\/li>\n<li>0% of ELLS were proficient in language in 8th grade<\/li>\n<li>14% of disadvantaged kids were proficient in math in grade 5<\/li>\n<li>11% of ELLs were proficient in language in. 5th grade<\/li>\n<li>24% of Economically disadvantaged students were proficient in language in 6th grade<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So, we\u2019re not exactly sure we want to be celebrating that.<\/p>\n<p>That said, for those who crucified our Superintendent for falling out of the rankings, she had been vindicated. The rankings are coming around. Again, the rankings are a couple of years behind. However, logic would dictate that next year&#8217;s rankings (based on 2015-2 016) would be even better due to dual immersion efforts. So, if you care about rankings, you will likely be happy for the next few years.<\/p>\n<p>Since we don\u2019t, what we really hope is that our school district continues to work to provide a quality education for ALL our students. We\u2019d really like to see our ELL and economically disadvantaged students on par with other students.<\/p>\n<p>That would be a big win.<\/p>\n<p>For now, we\u2019ll congratulate our School District on working hard to meet one of its goals.
